Glen Garioch 25 (Signatory Vintage 1990/2015 Cask 2752) Review

This is a 25 year Glen Garioch matured in an ex-bourbon hogshead and bottled at 50.6% ABV.

Nose: Cantaloupe and butterscotch notes leading off with some odd putty type notes developing. Turns slightly briny after a bit with some musty pineapple emerging.

Palate: Some vegetal notes blended with strong cantaloupe with more pineapple and brine showing up after a bit.

Finish: Oaky and malty – simple, but fairly long.

Rating: 87/100 – I don’t have a ton of experience with Glen Garioch as of yet, but I enjoyed the strong cantaloupe notes in this one.

Value for the money: I think I paid a little over $200 shipped for this one originally or so, and I think it’s a bit high at that price but not too bad.

Glen Garioch 16 Single Cask (1998/2014 Binny’s Selection Cask #987) Review

This is a 16 year Glen Garioch single cask expression that was matured in an ex-bourbon cask and bottled at 55.1% ABV.

Nose: Big, salty malt with fresh bread dough. Under ripe strawberries with tangerine, brackish seawater, and dried grass.

Palate: Nice full mouthfeel with notes of sultanas, farmy malt, dry oak, grape leaves, and a bit of cinnamon.

Finish: Full of floury dough and more sultanas – lasts for a long time.

Rating: 86/100

Value for the money: This retailed for $90 which is a very fair price given the quality.

Glen Garioch Founder’s Reserve Review

The Founder’s Reserve is Glen Garioch’s NAS inexpensive offering as part of its core line. It’s bottled at 48% ABV.

Nose: Brine, wet clay, dough/yeast with loads of young malt and bitter oak.

Palate: Quite sweet up front turning a bit grainy – oak starts to pull through and malt takes on a funky note. This has to be quite young based on the malt profile – I would guess maybe 4-6 years.

Finish: Tart green apples and dark chocolate

Rating: 80/100 – Not bad but its youth holds it back a bit

Value for the money: These go for around $40-$45, but I can’t recommend it at that level as there are other solid offerings in the same price range e.g. Dalwhinnie 15, Quinta Ruban, Macallan 10 Fine Oak, etc.
