This is a 12 year cask strength expression from Springbank which is one of its core releases. It’s matured in first fill sherry hogsheads before being finished in refill hogsheads and bottled at 50.3% ABV.
Nose: Much peatier than I expected, but I suppose 12 years is pretty young for a peated malt. Freshly extinguished matchead – perhaps a slightly sulphured sherry cask? Lots of brine and smoke as well.
Palate: Sherry sweetened malt doused in liquid smoke (non-artificial). Ginger, black pepper, seasoned dry oak, and again a slight sulphur note lurking.
Finish: Campfire smoke and acidic green grapes.
Rating: 83/100 – Good but the sulphur notes are slightly distracting for me.
Value for the money: This retails for around $80, but I wouldn’t recommend it over $45 or so.
