This is the Convict Release from Heartwood distillery in Tasmania. It was matured in port casks for 11 years and bottled at 58% ABV.
Nose: Musty malt tucked between folds of dark chocolate. Strong decaying vegetal notes and sulphur. Port influence becomes more noticeable over time.
Palate: Malt thickened with port and root vegetables and other vegetal notes with smoky oak.
Finish: Astringent with sulphured oak and a hint of port.
Rating: 70/100 – My first Heartwood expression and I was left unimpressed.
Value for the money: I think these retailed over $200 which is way too expensive. I would expect this to be closer to $60.
