Caperdonich 39 (Whisky-fassle 1972) Review

This is a 39 year expression from Caperdonich that was distilled in 1972, aged in a refill sherry cask, and bottled in 2011 at 45% ABV.

Nose: Mouth-wateringly sweet with sun dried hay and a boquet of fragrant flowers. Very strong yeast/dough components.

Palate: Sugar malt up front emboldened by old oak. Heavy does of tannins from the oak along with some subtle charcoal.

Finish: Smoke trails off with sugars dropping off to make way for grassy malt and bitter oak.

Rating: 91/100 – Fantastic nose, and a fascinating old Caperdonich.

Value for the money: These seem to go for $350+ which isn’t too bad considering the age. I’d be on the fence about spending that much, but I think it’s pretty fair.
