This is a 23 year Caol Ila matured in an ex-bourbon cask and bottled at 55.9% ABV.
Nose: Powerful peat heavy on the ashy side with campfire embers, dry & brittle oak, iodine, burnt chicken, black pepper, and a bit of currants.
Palate: Heavy ashes and black pepper with the pungent peat dominant throughout. A bit of brine soaked oak.
Finish: Oak becomes slightly sweet as tannins emerge alongside carbonized meat notes.
Value for the money: This looks to have retailed around $120 on Master of Malt originally which is a pretty fair price. I wouldn’t pay anything over that though.
