Galileo was released in 2012 as a 12 year expression aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and marsala casks. It was bottled at 49%. This release started the absurd marketing effort of launching samples of Ardbeg into space to study the effects.
Nose: Peat with a lot of sweet dark fruits: plums, dates, black cherry. A little seaweed, pepper, and apricot develop over time.
Palate: Ashy peat up front with hazelnuts and black pepper.
Finish: Ashy peat continues with biter oak and salty, dried fish.
Rating: 87/100 – The marsala cask really adds a lot to the nose for me and helps this stand out from the core Ardbeg range.
Value for the money: These retailed for around $95 and go for around $150 on the secondary. A bit high, but not too bad really since it’s discontinued.
