This is the 20 year old Pappy Van Winkle from the 2013 lineup which is bottled at 45.2% ABV.
Nose: Massive oak up front – no mistaking this for a young bourbon. Vanilla, cherry, and caramel notes follow alongside some leather, cinnamon and floral notes.
Palate: Oak still predominant note but caramel, vanilla, cherry, and toffee come through with a hint of allspice.
Finish: Long finish with subtle heat.
Rating: 91/100 – One of my top three expressions from the Pappy Van Winkle lineup. Some people find it overoaked alongside the 23, but I don’t mind a more oak-forward profile in bourbon as much.
Value for the money: As with all other Pappy Van Winkle expressions, this one is extremely rare and priced at an absurd level on the secondary. At retail ($130ish), it’s a good buy, but secondary value is around $1000 which is again absurd.
